GOP fundraising tool: fear of Franken

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Imagine this: You’re in charge of the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) and you’ve got to raise some dough. It’s a tough economy and people are still exhausted from last year’s marathon presidential campaign. So, what do you do when asking nicely just doesn’t seem to work?

Well, if you’re Guy Harrison, executive director of the NRCC, you use fear — the fear of Franken to be exact.

In an email with the subject line “Don’t Let’em Pull a Franken,” Harrison raised the specter of the Norm Coleman/Al Franken recount to help raise money for the extremely close special election in New York to fill the seat vacated by now-Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.

“Don’t let the Democrats steal this election,” wrote Harrison. “Less than 80 ballots separate Republican Jim Tedisco and his Democrat opponent. We cannot afford to allow the Democrats to steal this election…We need your support to ensure we can overcome the Democrats’ legal maneuvers… Democrats have almost succeeded in stealing the election in Minnesota and seating Al Franken. We cannot allow them to manipulate electoral results to seat another tax-troubled liberal.”
