Bill Owens Still Strongly Considering Healthcare Tax

Owens Lacks Leadership Skills, Waits for Washington’s Marching Orders

Washington- Days after offering a non-answer on the most pressing political and policy issue in America, Democrat candidate Bill Owens is still silent on whether he would be willing to tax employee health benefits to pay for his party’s government healthcare takeover. When asked by the Watertown Daily Times about whether he would embrace his party’s hypocritical approach to paying for their reckless healthcare agenda, Owens voted ‘present.’

“Federal lawmakers are considering taxing an employee’s health benefits to fund changes to the federal health-care system.”

“Mr. Owens gave no position but said it’s an idea ‘that I would have to look at very, very carefully.”’ (Jude Seymour, “Candidates for 23rd District Split on Labor Issues,” Watertown Daily Times, 8/30/09)

“Central and Northern New York families are looking for answers as to how Bill Owens’ friends in Washington plan to spend their hard-earned tax dollars, but Owens apparently can’t answer this critical question without help from his would-be party bosses,” said NRCC Communications Director Ken Spain. “By voting ‘present’ on such a critical issue at a time when his party is pushing a healthcare agenda that would kill jobs and force millions from their current coverage, Owens has already made it clear that he’s incapable of offering any sort of independent thought. Does Bill Owens really think that Central and Northern New York is interested in sending him to Washington to join the ranks of foot soldiers for the most fiscally reckless leadership in the country’s history?”

Unfortunately for Bill Owens, leadership means more than ducking and diving from the country’s most pressing issues. If Owens can’t answer a single simple but important question on the campaign trail, how exactly does he expect to tackle the country’s problems in Washington?
