Bruce Braley Faces Tough Crowd in Heated Healthcare Reform Debate

Democrat Leaders Encourage Party to Play Offense to Sell Their Government Healthcare Takeover to Constituents:

“Faced with sagging approval for Democrats’ health care plans heading into the August recess, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said Thursday that his party will have a more focused message buoyed by deals emerging from both the House and Senate….’We’re going to be on the air, we’re going to be in neighborhoods,’ he said. ‘We’re going to have a lot of help.’” (Steven T. Recess Roasting: Braley Confronted With Disapproval From Both Sides and All Ages on Government Involvement in Health Care

Tough crowd.

U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley, Iowa, heard from both sides of the heated health care reform debate this afternoon during a town hall meeting in Maquoketa. Some 350 people attended the latest in a series of forums the congressman has hosted around Iowa’s 1st Congressional District.

Among the crowd, about 150 Maquoketa middle schoolers, including one student who asked Braley how he could effectively address the health care reform bill when, as rumor has it, Braley had not read the entire document. In response, the congressman picked up a copy of the massive bill, walked over to the child and paged through his highlighted notes in the margins of page after page, indicating he, indeed, had read the bill.

Opponents attacked government involvement in health care, while proponents of reform criticized Braley and other Democrats for trying to win over reluctant Republicans. (Courtney Blanchard, “Braley faces tough crowd at Maquoketa town hall,” Dubuque Telegraph Herald, 09/03/2009)
