The Owens Agenda: Raise Money First, Answer Critical Questions…Eventually?

Dem Candidate Has No Clear Position on Healthcare – But He Does Have Washington Bankrolling His Campaign

Washington- Bill Owens has been noticeably silent when it comes to taking a stance on his party’s government healthcare takeover. As the Democrats’ healthcare agenda crashes and burns across the country, it’s clear that Owens is aware of the political liability that comes with telling voters where he really stands. But that won’t stop Owens from using Democrat bigwigs to bankroll his campaign.

Even though he’s failed to cement a stance on the most important political and policy issue facing the country today, Owens is calling in Vice President Joe Biden to line his campaign coffers:

“VP Joe Biden’s trip to Syracuse tomorrow – his second visit to the upstate city in four months – will include fundraiser for the Democrats’ candidate in NY-23, Bill Owens.

“The Biden-Owens event at the law offices of Bond, Schoeneck and King has not been formally announced, but a reader forwarded over the invite that appears below. (Elizabeth Benjamin, “Biden for Owens in NY-23,” New York Daily News, 9/6/09)

“Bill Owens should spend a little less time rubbing elbows with Washington insiders and a little more time telling central and northern New Yorkers whether he will support a healthcare agenda that will raise taxes and destroy Medicare,” said NRCC Communications Director Ken Spain. “Owens’ eagerness to raise campaign cash without taking a real stance on today’s most important issue speaks volumes about where his priorities would lie in Washington. Voters are looking for a congressman who is focused on providing real leadership and an independent voice, but it’s clear that Bill Owens has little interest in either when there is money to be raised.”

With mere hours to go before Bill Owens starts collecting checks and rubbing elbows with the Vice President, central and northern New Yorkers are still in the dark about his stance on his party’s reckless healthcare agenda. Will Owens ever manage to take a stance or is he content to fill his campaign fund by way of empty platitudes and non-answers?
