Rangel Remains Chairman Despite Growing Inquiry

The House ethics committee said Thursday that it is expanding its investigation of Rep. Charles Rangel, a day after Republicans failed for the third time to remove the New York Democrat from the chairmanship of the Ways and Means Committee.

For a year, the committee has been concentrating on alleged financial improprieties and fundraising irregularities, including failure to pay taxes. In a statement, the panel said it will also look at previously unreported assets and income.

Rangel recently changed his financial disclosure reports showing assets and income from 2002 to 2006 that should have been reported in those earlier years.
