George Demos Advances to ‘On the Radar’
New York Candidate Takes First Step Toward ‘Young Gun’ Status Washington- The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) has officially announced George Demos as an ‘On the Radar’ candidate, an important first step in its Young Guns program. Founded in the 2007-2008 election cycle by Reps. Eric Cantor (R-VA), Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), and Paul Ryan (R-WI), the Young Guns program is a member-driven organization dedicated to electing open-seat and challenger candidates nationwide. Demos is running in New York’s 1st Congressional District against Rep. Tim Bishop.
The Young Guns program is designed to assist Republican candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives achieve goals and benchmarks throughout the election cycle focused on the fundamentals of a winning campaign. By achieving ‘On the Radar’ status, Demos has already proven his ability to build a successful campaign structure and achieve important fundraising goals. “The NRCC is committed to working with George Demos as he continues to meet the rigorous goals of the Young Guns program,” said NRCC Chairman Pete Sessions. “George Demos is an accomplished leader for New York, and he already has significant momentum behind his campaign. I am confident that Republicans will be successful in our effort to defeat Tim Bishop, an out-of-touch career politician more concerned with advancing his party’s big-government agenda than creating jobs for Long Islanders.”
Demos is up against an incumbent who has acted as nothing more than a Democrat rubber-stamp, voting with his party’s anti-jobs agenda 96.6% of the time (Source: Washington Post, Votes Database). Bishop boasts hosting hundreds of townhall meetings throughout his district; however, Long Islanders have not received him well in the past and they don’t now. At a townhall last summer infuriated constituents shouted criticisms at the congressman for his positions on energy policy, health care, and auto industry bailouts, and Bishop responded by calling the meetings ‘pointless’ (Alex Isenstadt, “Town halls gone wild,” Politico, 8/3/09). He took even more heat from constituents this January, when an angry crowd of demonstrators protested Bishop’s pattern of voting in lockstep with Nancy Pelosi. Constituents are speaking out and letting the community know, Tim “Bishop must be defeated in November 2010” (Lisa Finn, “Angry Demonstrators Blast Congressman Tim Bishop,” East End Independent, 1/13/10).
George Demos is dedicated to bringing a new kind of leadership to New York, one that will fight for reform, integrity and accountability, rather than promote government bailouts and pork spending projects. Demos has worked selflessly in his career as a United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) enforcement attorney to fight corporate fraud and crime on behalf of the American people. As the grandson of Greek immigrants who came to this country in search of freedom and opportunity, Demos understands the importance of these values to New Yorkers and is determined to give them a voice in Washington. Demos raised over $300,000 in the fourth quarter from over 400 donors. Having achieved certain benchmarks to place him on the road to victory, George Demos now faces a new set of rigorous goals that will help him advance to the next level of the Young Guns program and help him build a competitive, effective and winning campaign.
