Self-funder clears way for Wu challenger
Republicans got a break in their efforts to take down Rep. David Wu (D-Ore.) today, as a well-funded outsider candidate dropped his bid.
Stephan Brodhead, who self-funded $234,000 in the fourth quarter, has announced he will be stepping aside for businessman Rob Cornilles. Cornilles is a member of the NRCC’s Young Guns program and has been steadily accumulating money for the newly targeted district. Brodhead wasn’t seen as a terribly strong candidate, but his money could have forced Cornilles to spend more on his primary than he would have liked. In a statement, Brodhead told the Oregonian, “I cannot match the quality of Rob Cornilles’s campaign staff or his expansive support base.” Cornilles still faces Iraq veteran Doug Keller, who had raised less than $8,000 through the end of the year. |
