Titus Gambles on Obama Visit, Will it Cost Her Big in the End?
Titus Gambles on Obama Visit, Will it Cost Her Big in the End?
President Obama’s Stimulus Has Failed Nevada, Yet Titus Still Welcomes Him and His Policies With Open Arms
Washington– On the heels of making anti-Vegas tourism remarks, President Obama will be visiting with Las Vegas small businesses and tourism officials today in an effort to explain why after a year of his failed ‘stimulus’, Nevada’s unemployment has gone from 8.4 percent to an astronomical 13 percent. In addition to skyrocketing unemployment rates, Nevada has experienced crippling debt and massive deficits. Rather than creating real solutions to Nevada’s economic problems, Dina Titus continues to gamble on her political future by welcoming Obama and his failed policies with open arms.
“The president has rankled local officials in Nevada on several occasions by mentioning Las Vegas as an example of waste and excess, telling voters in New Hampshire recently: ‘You don’t blow a bunch of cash in Vegas when you’re trying to save for college.’” (Carol E. Lee, “W.H.: Flap likely to ‘come up,’” Politico, 2/18/2010)
“Among other elected officials, Rep. Dina Titus, D-Nev., has no trepidation about welcoming Obama to Las Vegas in the aftermath of the embarrassing episode, a spokesman said.”
“‘Congresswoman Titus always welcomes a visit from President Obama,’ her spokesman Andrew Stoddard said. Titus ‘will use this opportunity to discuss with the President the challenges the people of Southern Nevada are facing, from painfully high unemployment to record foreclosures, and stress the need to take further action to create jobs in our community.’” (Steve Tetreault, “Obama to visit Las Vegas next week,” Las Vegas Review-Journal, 2/13/2010)
“Dina Titus is taking a huge gamble by recklessly supporting her party leaders’ failed economic policies 97.1 percent of the time,” said NRCC Communications Director Ken Spain. “Titus’ continued rubber-stamping of her party’s runaway spending spree has cost Nevada families and businesses greatly. Rather than creating real solutions, Titus continues to open her arms to the same people and policies that have driven Nevada’s economy into the ground.”
Las Vegas hotels and casinos have taken a major hit due to Obama and Titus’ failed policies:
“’At the end of the day, we believe the Las Vegas market will remain under pressure for the foreseeable future as competitors fight hard to win, or worse, buy business,’ wrote David Bain of Stern Agee.’”
“Las Vegas has been hit especially hard by the downturn, with visitation levels dropping and spending by those who do come sharply lower. And, amid a glut of new rooms, that has pressured rates and dragged down margins at all the major casino operators.” (William Spain, “Shares of Las Vegas Sands, MGM Mirage crumble,” MarketWatch, 2/18/2010)
In Dina Titus’ own words: Will she be ‘f—ed’ in November by gambling on her party’s failed policies?
“Like the former vice president, Titus dropped an F-bomb in frank conversation with Democrats… The Nevada representative, in a closed meeting with fellow House freshmen and Speaker Nancy Pelosi two weeks ago, said Democrats everywhere would be ‘f—ed’ if they didn’t learn from this month’s loss in the Massachusetts special Senate election.’” (Glenn Cook, “Titus said what everyone knows,” Las Vegas Review-Journal, 01/31/2010)
