Will Target Dems Support More Wasteful Big-Government Spending?

Will Ed Perlmutter Support More Wasteful Big-Government Spending?

As Democrats Look to Push Through Another ‘Stimulus,’ Will Perlmutter Rubber-Stamp Their Latest Wasteful Spending Bill?

Washington- After already running up a trillion dollar ‘stimulus’ tab, Washington Democrats are pushing another wasteful spending bill through Congress this week. The $15 billion spending bill is being misleadingly packaged and sold as another ‘jobs bill’. How quickly Democrats forget that their first ‘stimulus’ bill – which they promised would create or save four million jobs and keep unemployment under eight percent – has been exposed as a partisan government giveaway. Now, after running up one of the biggest deficits in history, can Colorado families expect Ed Perlmutter to continue his party’s spending binge?

This weekend’s Denver Post editorialized on the failure of the stimulus and asked Congress to reject the Democrats’ plan for yet another wasteful, ineffective stimulus bill:

“Obama and others have bragged about how the stimulus created or saved millions of jobs. The boast of ‘saving’ jobs is a dubious, at best, and we have yet to see substantive proof that all of that money has created a meaningful number of new jobs.

“Obama early on claimed if Congress didn’t act swiftly and approve the bill, unemployment could reach 8 percent. It spent most of the past year hovering around 10 percent.”

“Criticism such as that, along with the high jobless rate, is why Congress is now turning toward a second stimulus bill, couched as a jobs bill.”

“Congress must not rush into a second stimulus bill. Instead, taxpayers deserve a reasonable plan for eventually trimming the federal debt, which is swiftly becoming unsustainable.” (Editorial, “We don’t need a second stimulus,” Denver Post, 2/21/2010)

“After giving his seal of approval to a failed trillion-dollar stimulus, Ed Perlmutter has driven Colorado’s economy into the ground,” said NRCC Communications Director Ken Spain. “Despite the grim results, Perlmutter has continued to lend his support to a reckless spending spree that has led to one of the largest deficits in American history. As Democrats introduce another big-spending bill to Congress, will Perlmutter take the bait and continue to support an agenda that spends too much, borrows too much and taxes too much?”

Perlmutter’s first stimulus was so wasteful it will end up costing Colorado families more than originally projected:

The cost of President Obama’s stimulus plan has jumped another $75 billion, the Congressional Budget Office said Tuesday, and part of the reason is more people are getting unemployment benefits because they’ve lost jobs the bill was supposed to preserve.

“The CBO now says the stimulus package, passed by Congress last February, will cost $862 billion over 10 years because of the added unemployment-related costs. The program had originally been estimated to cost $787 billion when Mr. Obama signed it in February. (Stephen Dinan, “Tab From Stimulus Program Jumps, CBO Says,” Washington Times, 1/26/2010)
