Romney Endorses Republican Djou In Hawaii Special Election

Today’s news from former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney isn’t the $2,500 check his PAC is sending to fellow Republican Charles Djou.

It’s that Romney (like Tim Pawlenty before him) has noticed the opportunity posed by next month’s unusual special election in Hawaii — and is drawing attention to it with his endorsement.

Djou, a city councilman in Honolulu, is the only Republican vying to fill the seat vacated by Neil Abercrombie, who’s running for governor.

Two Democrats are running: Ex-Rep. Ed Case and state Senate President Colleen Hanabusa.

The contest has become messy, with the DCCC running an attack ad that was found by Factcheck.org to be false. That gave Romney the opening to ride to the rescue with a PAC check to “help him fight off the DCCC’s baseless attack ads,” as his news release says.

The election on May 22 is primary and general all rolled into one — candidates of both parties put their names on the ballot, and whoever gets the most votes will win. And here’s another twist: It’s all being done by mail.
