Roby best candidate for Congress
Based on her proven work ethic and her experience as a Montgomery City Council member for the past seven years, Martha Roby is the best candidate for the Republican nomination for the District 2 U.S. House seat in the primary runoff Tuesday.
Roby, who led a four-candidate field in the June 1 primary with 48 percent of the vote, narrowly missed capturing the nomination without a runoff. She will face Rick Barber, a Montgomery pool hall operator, who received 28 percent of the vote in the first primary. Roby has served on the Montgomery City Council since 2003, where she represents a racially and economically diverse council district. As a City Council member, she is active in her district, attending many community events and serving on numerous committees. She holds a law degree from Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in 2001, and she practiced law for several years. She is a strong community volunteer, having worked with Sav-A-Life Montgomery, the Cleveland Avenue YMCA, the Britton YMCA, the Montgomery Area Business Committee for the Arts and the Montgomery Weed and Seed executive board. If nominated by the GOP, she would face Democratic incumbent U.S. Rep. Bobby Bright in the November general election. If elected to Congress, Roby, 34, promises to stir things up. “We need someone who is willing to say ‘no’ and break Washington’s addiction to wasteful spending,” she wrote in a recent Montgomery Advertiser guest opinion column. “I have a track record of cutting wasteful spending on the Montgomery City Council, and I promise to do the same in Washington.” She promises to support a strong military and openness in government and to push for laws that make it easier for businesses to increase employment. Her service as a City Council member has shown her strong work ethic and her ability to grasp public issues. The Montgomery Advertiser recommends Roby to Republican voters in the District 2 congressional race in the runoff. |
