Gibbs Says GOP Has Shot at Winning House This Fall

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs suggested Sunday that Republicans could take control of the House in the November elections.

“People are going to have a choice to make in the fall,” Gibbs said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

Gibbs stated that “there’s no doubt there’s enough seats in play” to allow “Republicans to take control” in the 112th Congress.

“The fact that the Obama White House is acknowledging that there is even a possibility that Democrats could lose their majority in the House should be read as a tacit admission that their economic policies have failed in the eyes of the voters,” Ken Spain, communications director for the National Republican Congressional Committee, said in a statement Sunday afternoon.

Gibbs also said that Democrats would play up the possibility of House Minority Leader John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) becoming Speaker and Rep. Joe L. Barton (R-Texas) becoming the chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee as a strategy for rallying voters against a GOP takeover this fall.

Both lawmakers have recently been accused of being out of touch with voters. Boehner has compared the financial crisis to an ant, and Barton apologized to BP officials last month for the Obama administration’s treatment of the company.

A BP drilling rig has been gushing oil into the Gulf of Mexico since April, and Barton, the ranking member on Energy and Commerce, equated the administration’s insistence that BP set up a claims account with a “shakedown.” He quickly retracted his statement.
