Ellsworth Ditches Tainted Campaign Cash from Rangel

July 23, 2010

Rep. Brad Ellsworth intends to distribute about $12,000 in political contributions he has received from fellow Congressman Charles Rangel to various Hoosier charities, acknowledging that the New York City lawmaker’s ethical dilemma raises questions about the propriety of keeping the money.

Ellsworth, D-Evansville, the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate from Indiana embroiled in a tough race with Republican Dan Coats, has come under pressure from the Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee to denounce Rangel and return the donations he received from him in past campaigns. Ellsworth received no Rangel money in support of his Senate bid.

“The bottom line, with Mr. Rangel or with anyone else in public office, is that actions have consequences,” Ellsworth said in a statement. “Those who violate the public’s trust must be held accountable and punished appropriately for their behavior. In light of these serious charges, there must be a thorough and expeditious trial.”
