Robert Hurt Campaigns in Charlottesville

August 16, 2010

Republican candidate Robert Hurt campaigned in Charlottesville on Monday. His objective is to win over voters in what’s normally a democratic stronghold. Hurt says he needs votes from Charlottesville and Albemarle County to win in November.

Hurt ate lunch at Lord Hardwicke’s in Charlottesville during a packed schedule around the city. The 5th District Republican candidate spent his lunch hour talking with supporters as they dined.

Hurt supporter Russ Seltzer said, “The alternatives aren’t at all what I’m interested in, and I think I like what Mr. Hurt has to say.”

Another Hurt supporter Victor Pena said, “He emphasized the grassroots that he is building.”

Hurt’s efforts around Charlottesville could be classified as an uphill battle, since both the city and the county usually vote for democrats. He said, “It’s a tremendous amount of the population in the 5th District, and we’ve got to do well here if we’re going to be victorious.”

Hurt believes his platform spans all political parties. “Our message of returning to our founding principles of limited government and free markets, individual liberty, that message is something that resonates with republicans, independents and democrats.”

He is optimistic he can sway Charlottesville voters to vote for him in November. He said, “It went for Bob McDonnell. I think it can go for Robert Hurt.”

Hurt answered questions on Monday about everything from fair tax to financial support, which are typical questions voters ask when they haven’t heard him campaign before. He’s also trying to campaign in the northern part of the 5th District as much as he can until the November election.
