Kristi Noem: Spouses of representatives should be banned from lobbying Congress

September 27, 2010

State Rep. Kristi Noem said today that she supports
a full ban on spouses of congressional members
from lobbying Congress.

Noem, the Republican candidate for U.S. House,
used the opportunity to take a direct shot at her
opponent, Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin, whose
husband, Max, lobbies in both the House and
Senate.

“Legislating and lobbying simply should not mix in
the same household,” Noem said. “It is a recipe for c
onflicts of interest and possibly even corruption.”

Max Sandlin is a former Texas congressman who
lost his re-election bid in 2004. The two have been
married since 2007.

Herseth Sandlin has responded to concerns about
her husband’s lobbying by saying he is not
permitted to lobby her or her staff.
