Advertisement with Tim Walberg's mother a refreshing change of pace

September 30, 2010

“That Schauer guy is full of baloney!”

You might disagree with Alice Walberg, the 94-year-old mother of congressional candidate Tim Walberg, but you have to admire her performance in one of the more refreshing TV ads of this campaign.

In it, candidate Walberg and his mother are pictured sitting on the couch, watching television. They see an advertisement from U.S. Rep. Mark Schauer that criticizes Walberg’s views on Social Security — leading to the above comment from Mother Walberg.

The ad cleverly ends with Walberg’s voice: “I’m Tim Walberg, and my mom and I approve this message.”

In this dreary campaign season, here’s one commercial that shows politics still can be enjoyable. The candidate smiles, the commercial is humorous, and the most negative line — saying the opponent is “full of baloney” — is pretty tame.

A note to candidates: If you want to win over the voters, it helps to trot out a sweet old lady.
