John Gomez Reaches ‘Contender’ Status
New York Republican Takes Critical Second Step in ‘Young Guns’ Program

Washington- The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) has officially announced that Republican John Gomez (NY-02) has reached ‘Contender’ status as part of its Young Guns program. ‘Contender’ status is the second step in the three-level program. Gomez now faces a new set of benchmarks to reach ‘Young Gun’ status in his bid to unseat Democrat Rep. Steve Israel this fall in New York’s Second Congressional District. The Second District was once a Republican-leaning area but has been held by Israel since 2001. The partisan incumbent began running TV ads in his Long Island district weeks ago, highlighting his vulnerability and his uphill battle to re-election this November.
Founded in the 2007-2008 election cycle by Reps. Eric Cantor (R-VA), Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Paul Ryan (R-WI), the Young Guns program is a member-driven organization dedicated to electing open-seat and challenger candidates nationwide. By achieving ‘Contender’ status, Gomez has already demonstrated his ability to build a successful campaign structure and achieve vital fundraising goals.

“John Gomez has met a series of rigorous fundraising and campaign goals that will go a long way in helping to put this seat in the Republican column,” said NRCC Chairman Pete Sessions (R-TX). “John is part of a strong and growing pool of candidates who are frustrated with the Democrat majority’s big-government ways and aren’t willing to stand by any longer. The success of his campaign has put congressional Democrats on notice that Americans are ready to turn the page on an agenda that spends too much, borrows too much and taxes too much.”

A native Long Islander and businessman, Gomez serves as the president of a successful telecommunications consulting company located in his hometown of Bayport. He has appeared frequently as a legal analyst and political commentator on radio and television programs, including “Good Morning, New York,” “The Sean Hannity Show,” “The Mark Levin Show,” “Face-Off,” “News 12 Long Island,” 770WABC, 570WKLIF, 540WLIE and 98.5 WBON. Gomez has always been an informed and active citizen, dedicated to the principles of limited spending, lower taxes and smaller government – his experience and background make him an ideal fit to represent New York’s Second District. In yet another sign that Israel is nervous about his reelection – he recently voted to adjourn Congress early so he could run home and fight to save his own job rather than get to work saving Long Islanders from the massive oncoming Obama tax hike. Gomez now faces a new set of rigorous goals that will elevate him to the top level of the Young Guns program and help him build a competitive, effective and winning campaign.
