Gardner gets our vote

October 8, 2010

Colorado’s Fourth Congressional District has garnered attention from the local coffee shops to across the nation. Colorado legislator Cory Gardner is campaigning to unseat incumbent Betsy Markey.

Markey, of Fort Collins, has an evident history in private business, and has worked on different levels of government. Our concern is who has the best understanding of northeast Colorado socially, economically and politically.

That concern leads us to Gardner.

Gardner is a well-known figure in the area, knows many of the community leaders by first name and has direct ties to the Yuma area. He has an strong understanding of water issues regarding agriculture and our communities.

Rural Colorado is more than business, and likewise is not just agriculture. It is a mix of business owners, various agriculture ventures and businesses that rely on the two to support families. Many of these businesses and agencies can track their history for generations. These same businesses are now watching recent policies with worry their days are numbered.

Northeast Colorado needs a legislator who sees the national issues, but also understand the local impact of legislation. Issues such as water management, “Cap and Trade,” energy and food quality are issues that directly impact rural Colorado, issues that will be best served by an individual who has walked the fields, worked with the farmers and spent time in the area first hand.

We choose Gardner because of his history in the region, of working a family business within the rural economy, and of traveling the area first as a state legislator. We choose Gardner because we see him as having the best understanding of the needs of eastern rural Colorado.

The needs of northeast Colorado are best served by the person who has grown up in the area, understands the link between a wet spring and a thriving business sector, and how that mandated taxes can quickly stop a farming operation or shut a business.

We encourage everyone to carefully review the options before entering the voting booth or filling out the ballot at home. For our opinion, Gardner is the best candidate for the Fourth Congressional District.
