gives Jaime Herrera 11-point lead over Denny Heck in 3rd District race

October 14, 2010

A day after a poll commissioned by a Washington, D.C., newspaper concluded the 3rd Congressional District race is a dead heat, KING-TV in Seattle released its own poll indicating that Republican candidate Jaime Herrera maintains a hefty 11-point lead over Denny Heck, her Democratic opponent.

The new poll, the latest of three conducted for KING-TV by the polling company SurveyUSA, concludes that Herrera is “poised for (a) take-away” in the hotly contested race to succeed Democratic U.S. Rep. Brian Baird.

It found that if the election were held today, Herrera would win handily with 53 percent of the vote to 42 percent for Heck. Earlier polls by SurveyUSA showed Herrera leading by 13 points in August and nine points in September.

The Survey USA poll produced sharply different results than those reported Wednesday by The Hill, a Washington, D.C. newspaper, which showed Herrera leading Heck 42 percent to 40 percent, well within the margin of error, with 15 percent of voters still undecided.

The SurveyUSA poll found that Herrera maintains double-digit leads among men, voters under age 50, and independents, while Heck was gaining ground among lower-income voters.

Pollsters interviewed 579 likely voters in the 3rd District between Oct. 10 and Oct. 12. The poll’s margin of error is plus or minus 4.1 percent.
