Schuler Knows His Tax and Spend Voting Record Could Cost Him His Job

April 4, 2011

Good Afternoon –

Just wanted to make sure you saw this CBS Video of Heath Shuler saying that he is willing to put tax increases on the table “even if we all lose our jobs.”

Shuler Wants Tax Increases On The Table. “In the House, the effort by the Blue Dogs would seek to cut federal deficits by $4 trillion over the next decade. The goals released Tuesday said that everything must be on the table including possible tax increases and an overhaul of Social Security.” (Wall Street Journal, 3/30/2011)

Shuler Admits His Tax And Spend Voting Record Could Cost Him His Job. “Rep. Heath Shuler (D-N.C.), a member of the centrist bloc who’s taken a leading role in speaking on behalf of the Blue Dogs, said he wanted a vote on the plan produced last year by the fiscal commission, which called for a series of spending cuts and entitlement and tax reforms. The debt situation is serious enough that lawmakers should be willing to lose their jobs over a vote to address it, Shuler said, which is likely to be a tough sell for many of his colleagues. ‘Let’s all agree to put the deficit commission on the table,’ Shuler said in a video interview with CBS News. ‘Let’s vote on it, let’s have an up-or-down vote. That’s a bipartisan piece of legislation that was very successful to get members on both sides to agree.’” (The Hill, 4/1/2011)

NRCC Comment: “Shuler may talk a big game about fiscal responsibility, but time and time again he offers the same failed tax and spend plays. It’s time Shuler, a member of the Budget Committee, steps up and proposes meaningful plans for fiscal reform to encourage job creation in the private sector instead of the failed policies of the past.” – NRCC Spokeswoman Andrea Bozek
