Will Shuler Choose Pro-Growth Path or Continue Spending & Borrowing?
North Carolina Democrat Can Either Take Meaningful Action or Continue to Make Matters Worse Washington — Now that Republicans have unveiled their pro-growth budget plan that would reduce the deficit and grow the economy, Heath Shuler will have an opportunity to truly demonstrate a commitment to fiscal responsibility and job creation. However, up until now, Shuler has continued to stand with his Democrat leaders who have embraced their flawed budget proposal that raises trillions in taxes and continues to worsen our deficit. Now that a fiscally sound, pro-growth plan has been proposed, won’t Shuler choose this instead of more taxes and debt? “Although Heath Shuler continues to stand with his party’s plan to raise taxes and add trillions of dollars in new deficits that would stunt economic growth, he now has the opportunity to put politics aside and instead support a proposal which actually reduces spending and creates jobs,” said NRCC Communications Director Paul Lindsay. “These are the two paths Shuler has to choose from, and families in North Carolina will surely be paying close attention as he decides whether to be part of the solution or continue to be part of the problem.” The Democrats’ budget plan increases taxes by $1.5 trillion and generates $9.5 trillion in deficits: “President Barack Obama’s 2012 budget would produce $2.3 trillion more in deficits over the next decade than the administration projects, according to the Congressional Budget Office. The nonpartisan agency said today the administration’s plan would generate $9.5 trillion in deficits between 2012 and 2021, compared with the $7.2 trillion forecast last month by the White House budget office.” (Brian Faler, “Obama’s Budget Underestimates Federal Deficits, CBO Says,” Bloomberg, 3/18/11)
“The budget calls for $1.5 trillion in tax increases over the next 10 years, with the bulk of that coming from allowing former President George W. Bush’s tax cuts for couples earning more than $250,000 to expire.” (Roger Runningen and Brian Faler, “Obama’s $3.7 Trillion Budget Sets Fight in Congress,” Bloomberg, 2/14/11)
And House Democrat leaders embrace the plan as their own: “Instead, we support President Obama’s budget to out innovate, out educate and out build the rest of the world.” (Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Floor Remarks, 2/15/11)
Now that a pro-growth, fiscally responsible alternative has been proposed to the Democrats’ plan to raise taxes and increase deficits, Heath Shuler will have a clear choice to make. However, it remains to be seen if he is willing to take that stand for the families and small businesses throughout North Carolina who continue to suffer the consequences from Shuler’s free-spending, job-destroying policies.
