Will Costello Still Push for More Taxes Amidst Economic Turmoil?
New Economic Troubles Make Democrat Tax Hikes an Even Worse Idea
Washington — As the debt ceiling debate continues, Illinois Democrat Jerry Costello and his fellow Democrats are still insisting on raising job-destroying taxes in order to pay for their spending spree instead of having the government finally live within its means. Costello’s Democrat tax increases during a time of economic turmoil would be more harmful than ever to struggling Illinois families. Will Costello continue to make matters worse by demanding tax hikes during an economic downturn?
“Jerry Costello and his fellow Democrats have had the audacity to ask Illinois families and small businesses to sacrifice more in taxes to pay for the Democrat spending spree in Washington, and news that the economy is still struggling only makes their tax hikes worse,” said NRCC Communications Director Paul Lindsay. “Costello and his Democrat colleagues clearly have their priorities wrong when they continue to ask for more taxes and fewer jobs in order to protect their real goal, which is to defend their big-spending ways at all costs.”
The Obama Administration reiterated their demands for tax increases again on Wednesday:
“The President made clear what his positions are, as he did in his speech at George Washington University and as he has repeatedly since then, and as other members of his team have. … Look, we obviously feel strongly that you need to take a balanced approach if you’re going to come up with significant — in our proposal — $4 trillion of deficit reduction over 10 to 12 years. That would have to include addressing spending in the tax code.” (“Press Briefing by Press Secretary Jay Carney and Assistant to the President for Manufacturing Ron Bloom,” The White House, 6/1/11)
Markets dropped yesterday after disappointing numbers in the employment and manufacturing sectors:
“Stocks on Wall Street slumped more than 2 percent and Treasury yields fell on Wednesday as new economic statistics sent a bleak picture of the employment and manufacturing sectors.” (Christine Hauser, “Stocks Drop Sharply on Disappointing Economic Reports,” The New York Times, 6/1/11)
This makes the Democrats’ insistence on raising taxes to pay for their spending spree even more destructive:
“The droopy economy makes Obama’s demands for tax hikes even more problematic. That is a current dilemma as he tries to reach a deal on the debt ceiling.” (Jennifer Rubin, “The poor economy complicates Obama’s debt ceiling position,” The Washington Post‘s Right Turn Blog, 6/1/11)
New data shows that Illinois families need jobs more than ever, but instead Costello and his fellow Democrats are insisting on tax increases which will make matters worse during economic turmoil. Will Costello finally stop asking for more sacrifice from Illinois voters with new taxes and simply have the government live within its means?
