Dem Leaders Say Schrader Wants Another Credit Card with No Strings Attached
House Minority Whip Says Oregon Democrat Likely to Vote for More Borrowing Without Cuts, Making the $14 Trillion Debt Even Worse

Washington — House Democrat Whip Steny Hoyer today insisted that most or all of his colleagues would support a clean debt limit bill, absent of any cuts or fiscal reform. This means that Kurt Schrader will likely support such a measure, making the deficit even worse instead of cutting spending in Washington and finally turning our fiscal prospects around.

“With our debt exceeding $14 trillion already, it’s incredible that Kurt Schrader and his fellow Washington Democrats would demand the ability to borrow trillions more and reject any accommodation for a single cut,” said NRCC Communications Director Paul Lindsay. “The government continues to borrow $4 billion a day, piling that burden upon future generations of Oregon families. Schrader’s response seems to be to accelerate that, and continue borrowing trillions from foreign countries like China instead of finally having the government live within its means.”

House Democrat Whip Steny Hoyer, the Democrat leader in charge of counting votes within his caucus, said a clean debt limit would be overwhelmingly supported by House Democrats:

“…[A]nd I believe that almost every member of our party, if not every member of our party, would vote on a clean extension to make that happen.” (Rep. Steny Hoyer, Press Conference, 7/15/11)

Kurt Schrader’s Oregon constituents want Washington to get serious about fiscal reform, but instead he seems ready to double down on the Democrats’ spending spree. In demanding more borrowing while rejecting any cuts, Schrader would again prove his promises to get the Democrats’ spending spree under control are merely lip service.
