Cardoza ‘Won’t Quit’ Spending While Everyone Else is Forced to Live Within Their Means
California Democrat Votes Against Cutting His Own Office’s Perks While Demanding More Tax Hikes

Washington — As the struggle to get spending in Washington under control continues, Dennis Cardoza seems to be resisting at every step, even refusing to cut perks and spending within his own office. Instead of cutting back his own budget like everyone else, Cardoza is demanding even higher taxes on the families and small-businesses that are already suffering under the consequences of his failed Democrat spending spree.

“It is very telling that Dennis Cardoza would refuse to cut back the perks within his own office, then turn around and demand more tax dollars from families and small-businesses in California,” said NRCC Communications Director Paul Lindsay. “Cardoza has made it increasingly clear that when it comes time to vote, the only thing he ‘won’t quit’ is defending and expanding his Democrat spending spree, even if that means job-destroying taxes when working families can afford it least.”

On Friday, the House voted to cut their operating budget back 6.4%, limiting staff bonuses and merit pay during a struggling economy:

“The bill, H.R. 2551, would trim the legislative branch by $227 million, to $3.3 billion for the next fiscal year. The bill carries with it a message from appropriators that legislative-branch agencies need to pare back bonuses and other merit pay in light of the fiscal crisis.

“Report language accompanying the bill calls on all agencies to justify bonuses paid out, and notes that some bonuses are lifting certain salaries higher than those earned by members of Congress. ‘The committee is very concerned about the amount of performance-based merit increases being given by some agencies of the legislative branch,’ that report said.” (Pete Kasperowicz, “House makes 6.4 percent cut to congressional budget in 252-159 vote,” The Hill‘s Floor Action Blog, 7/22/11)

Dennis Cardoza voted against these efforts that would limit his own office’s perks. (H.R. 2551, Roll Call #629, Passed 252-159: R 213-16; D 39-143, 7/22/11)

But House Democrats remain committed to raising taxes, with leaders suggesting no House Democrat would vote for a debt deal without tax increases:

“The leader of the House Democratic Caucus indicated this weekend that tax-revenue hikes must be included in a sweeping deficit-reduction plan to win the Democratic support it will need to pass. Rep. John Larson (D-Conn.) suggested House Republicans would get no Democratic help if the final package includes only spending cuts and the promise of new revenues later.” (Mike Lillis, “Head of Dem Caucus warns: No revenues in deficit deal, no Dem votes,” The Hill, 7/23/11)

Dennis Cardoza has been making his priorities clear, adamantly defending his own staff bonuses and perks in his office while demanding higher taxes on families and small-businesses in California. Cardoza continues to demonstrate that when it’s time to vote, he will consistently defend his Democrat spending spree regardless of the cost.
