Shuler ‘Won’t Quit’ Demanding Higher Taxes that Destroy Jobs
North Carolina Democrat & Party Leaders Among the Few Insisting on Tax Hikes During a Bad Economy

Washington — Instead of joining continuing efforts to have the government live within its means, Heath Shuler and his fellow House Democrats are among the stubborn few still demanding higher taxes that would not only allow them to continue spending recklessly, but also would destroy jobs in North Carolina. Shuler is making it increasingly clear that he is not serious about real fiscal reform that is greatly needed to avoid the fiscal and economic disaster that his unchecked spending spree will result in.

“The one consistent demand from Heath Shuler and his Democrat colleagues has been more job-destroying taxes so he could avoid making real cuts to the spending spree he has championed,” said NRCC Communications Director Paul Lindsay. “Shuler continues to demonstrate that he will defend his Democrat spending binge at any cost, even if that means making a bad economy worse with higher taxes on middle-class families in North Carolina.”

House Democrats have continued to make it clear that they will not support a plan that fails to include tax increases, even though they would do considerable damage to a struggling economy:

“The head of the House Democratic Caucus pushed back hard Monday against plans to reduce deficits without new tax revenues.”

“Larson was quick to note that the tax-revenue hikes supported by Democrats wouldn’t kick in for a few years… ‘But they’re going to have to be included in any kind of balanced plan,’ he said. A cuts-only strategy, Larson added, ‘is just untenable.'” (Mike Lillis, “Larson: Debt plan must include revenues,” The Hill, 7/25/11)

Heath Shuler and his fellow House Democrats are among the strongest remaining advocates for higher taxes in order to avoid cutting back their reckless spending spree. Unfortunately, if Shuler gets his way, middle-class families in North Carolina would have to watch a bad economy become even worse.
