“New Democrats” Just Like Old Democrats

November 30, 2011

“New Democrats” Claim to be the New, New Thing, But They’re Just Like the Other Fake Moderate Democrats

  • As the “Blue Dog” coalition of so-called moderate Democrats continues to dwindle, another group of Democrats claim that labeling themselves as “new Democrats” will help hide their record of voting for job-destroying policies.
  •        The reality is that these “new Democrats” are just the same old Democrats who vote heavily with the Nancy Pelosi-led Democrat caucus.
  •        In order to believe that these “new Democrats” are moderate, you have to believe that voting for the pillars of Pelosi’s job-destroying agenda in the last Congres is moderate. Does anyone actually believe that voting for the failed trillion-dollar stimulus, the government takeover of healthcare and cap-and-trade makes one a “moderate” Democrat?

BACKGROUND

As the “Blue Dog” coalition of so-called moderate Democrats continues to dwindle, another group of Democrats claim that labeling themselves as “new Democrats” will help hide their record of voting for job-destroying policies:

THE LATEST DEMOCRAT REBRAND: “NEW DEMOCRATS” TO SUCCEED WHERE BLUE DOGS FAILED?:“Like the once-mighty Blue Dog Coalition, the New Democrats have had a diminished role in the minority, with a smaller membership and few legislative opportunities to flex their influence on stock issues such as trade and innovation. But unlike the predominantly rural and Southern Blue Dog membership, New Democrats from urban and suburban districts contend that their numbers will only increase after the 2012 elections.” (Jessica Brady, “New Democrats Feel Their Time is Coming,” Roll Call, 11/30/2011)

LET’S REMEMBER, BLUE DOGS NOW “TRY[ING] TO PERSEVERE AMID LOW OBAMA POLL NUMBERS”: “Blue Dogs in Congress, already an endangered species following the last election, are bracing for another challenging campaign season. … Redistricting, coupled with President Obama’s low approval ratings, has buoyed GOP hopes of picking up seats in the 2012 election.” (Cameron Joseph, “Conservative Dems Try to Persevere Amid Low Obama Poll Numbers,” The Hill, 9/27/2011)

BLUE DOGS “ZEROING IN ON FUNDRAISING AHEAD OF WHAT THEY EXPECT TO BE ANOTHER TOUGH ELECTION”: “The moderates who survived the brutal 2010 election that wiped out about half of their 54-member caucus are zeroing in on fundraising ahead of what they expect to be another tough election, this time facing off against Republicans in many redrawn districts.” (Robin Bravender, “Blue Dogs in the Hunt for More Money,” Politico, 10/27/2011)

“BLUE DOG DEMOCRATS A DYING BREED,” 15 OF REMAINING 22 RATED “VULNERABLE”: (Aaron Blake and Rachel Weiner, “Blue Dog Democrats a Dying Breed,” The Washington Post, 7/16/2011)

The reality is that these “new Democrats” are just the same old Democrats who vote heavily with the Nancy Pelosi-led Democrat caucus:
