Shuler Voted to Raise Taxes for Middle-Class Families & Destroy 130,000 American Jobs
North Carolina Democrat Last Week Paved the Way for More Job-Killing Uncertainty While Opposing a Full Year Payroll Tax Cut Extension

Washington — Despite the fact that job-killing uncertainty continues to burden the struggling American economy, Heath Shuler has yet to support a year-long payroll tax cut extension plan like President Obama asked for. In fact, last week Shuler voted to let payroll taxes increase on every working American while also allowing himself a pay raise and blocking the creation of 130,000 jobs associated with the popular Keystone XL pipeline project (Roll Call #923, 12/13/11). Shuler should drop his stubborn opposition to a full year extension and join efforts to keep middle-class families’ taxes low and give small businesses the certainty they need to grow.

“Just last week, Heath Shuler welcomed middle-class tax increases while giving himself a raise and blocking the creation of 130,000 jobs,” said NRCC Communications Director Paul Lindsay. “Shuler’s backwards Washington priorities are exactly what working families in North Carolina are tired of, but exactly what they expect from a Democrat party who continuously votes to burden the middle-class with more taxes and fewer jobs. If his record is any indication, Shuler’s North Carolina constituents will again be disappointed today when he votes to kick the can down the road and allow a tax increase to kick in at the beginning of March.”

President Obama has said it would be “inexcusable” to not extend these tax cuts for an entire year, but that is exactly what House Democrats have done:

“While this agreement is for two months, it is my expectation — in fact it would be inexcusable for Congress not to further extend this middle-class tax cut for the rest of the year. It should be a formality. And hopefully it’s done with as little drama as possible when they get back in January.” (David Jackson, “Obama, GOP: Back to drawing board on payroll tax cut?” USA Today‘s The Oval Blog, 12/19/11)

Instead of voting to kick the can down the road even further today, Heath Shuler should work with his colleagues across the aisle and support a middle-class tax cut, instead of supporting more tax increases and fewer American jobs.
