Matheson’s Government Takeover of Healthcare Still a Disaster One Year After His Vote
Utah Democrat Voted Exactly One Year Ago to Continue Disastrous Takeover of Healthcare, and it Keeps Getting Worse

Washington — Jim Matheson voted exactly one year ago today to keep the Democrats’ government takeover of healthcare in place (Roll Call #14, 1/19/11), and the consequences continue to erode America’s economy. Matheson voted with President Obama to keep the disastrous law in place despite the fact that healthcare premiums are increasing and job creators are increasingly burdened under the massive government takeover.

“Jim Matheson demonstrated one year ago that he would side with his Democrat leaders and protect their disastrous government takeover of healthcare,” said NRCC Communications Director Paul Lindsay. “Since then Matheson’s constituents in Utah have been paying the price as healthcare premiums rise and jobs are destroyed under the takeover’s overbearing fees and mandates.”

The Democrats’ government takeover of healthcare is actually making premiums rise instead of fall like they promised:

“At the moment, the new law is making health care slightly less affordable. Independent health care experts say the law has caused some insurance premiums to rise. As we wrote in October, the new law has caused about a 1 percent to 3 percent increase in health insurance premiums for employer-sponsored family plans because of requirements for increased benefits. Last year’s premium increases cast even more doubt on another promise the president has made — that the health care law would ‘lower premiums by up to $2,500 for a typical family per year.'” (D’Angelo Gore, “Promises, Promises,” FactCheck.org, 1/4/12)

Job creators are also getting slammed with new mandates and costs from the disastrous law:

“When CKE’s health-care advisers, citing Obamacare’s complexities, opacities and uncertainties, said that it would add between $7.3 million and $35.1 million to the company’s $12 million health-care costs in 2010, Puzder said: I need a number I can plan with. They guessed $18 million — twice what CKE spent last year building new restaurants. Obamacare must mean fewer restaurants.

“And therefore fewer jobs. Each restaurant creates, on average, 25 jobs — and as much as 3.5 times that number of jobs in the community. (CKE spends about $1 billion a year on food and paper products, $175 million on advertising, $33 million on maintenance, etc.)” (George Will, “Choking on Obamacare,” The Washington Post, 12/2/11)

The Democrats’ government takeover of healthcare has made matters worse instead of better, but it was only one year ago today that Jim Matheson emphatically voted to continue this disastrous policy. As long as Matheson and his Democrat leaders in Washington continue to push their government takeover of healthcare, middle-class families in Utah will see higher healthcare premiums and fewer jobs.
