How Jobs Are Sent to China: Keystone Rejection by McNerney Hurts American Workers, Helps U.S. Competitors
California Democrat Helped Party Leaders Block 20,000 Keystone XL Jobs, and Now Canada is Looking to Send Jobs and Energy to China

WASHINGTON — The consequences of Jerry McNerney and his fellow Democrats’ efforts to block the Keystone XL pipeline are becoming clearer now that Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper is in China pitching the jobs and energy that could have been American with a simple permit approval. Although McNerney was able to placate wealthy activist Democrat donors by rejecting the pipeline’s estimated 20,000 jobs, middle-class families are now receiving an unfortunate lesson on how the Democrats’ anti-job policies are driving more businesses away.

“Actions by Democrats in Washington continue to have a harmful impact on American jobs and our country’s standing around the world. The massive failure of Jerry McNerney’s job-killing proposals is playing out before the eyes of middle-class families in California who are watching 20,000 shovel-ready Keystone jobs leave for China,” said NRCC Communications Director Paul Lindsay. “McNerney might have been able to appease activist Democrat donors by helping reject the Keystone permit, but it was certainly not worth permanently staining America’s reputation as a place to invest in and create jobs.”

Since Democrats rejected the Keystone XL pipeline, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper is currently in China pitching those jobs and energy that would have otherwise been headed to the United States:

“The prime minister is courting China as a customer for Canadian natural resources — insisting it’s in Canada’s national interest to send oil and gas to Asia — and looking to sew stronger economic ties with the world’s fastest-growing economy…

“Currently, Canada only exports oilsands crude to the United States, but the Obama administration’s recent decision to reject, for now, the Keystone XL oilsands pipeline has Harper searching for new energy customers.” (Jason Fekete, “Harper lands in China for four-day visit,” Postmedia News, 2/7/12)

Jerry McNerney’s Keystone pipeline rejection is an unfortunate textbook example of how America’s economy loses under the Democrats’ job-killing policies created in Washington. In this instance, McNerney’s Democrat donors scored a victory, but working families and small businesses across the country will be paying the price.
