Pelosi Skirts Illegality With Campaign Fundraising Pitch
Democrat Leader May Have Violated Both the U.S. Criminal Code and House Ethics Rules By Soliciting Donors within Taxpayer-Funded House Office Building

SPIN CYCLE: Then-Speaker Pelosi Promised that Democrats Would “Demand the Highest Ethics from Every Public Servant”:

“Our goal is to restore accountability, honesty and openness at all levels of government. To do so, we will create and enforce rules that demand the highest ethics from every public servant, sever unethical ties between lawmakers and lobbyists, and establish clear standards that prevent the trading of official business for gifts.” (Nancy Pelosi’s “A New Direction for America,” Page 21)

RINSE CYCLE: Democrat Leader Pelosi Runs Into Trouble with Both U.S. Criminal Code and House Ethics Rules With Fundraising Pitch in a Federal Building:

“House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) might have briefly run afoul of congressional ethics rules at a Capitol press conference on Thursday when she made a statement that could be construed as a solicitation for campaign contributions.

“The Democratic leader was holding a briefing to promote a campaign finance disclosure bill when she said she was ‘asking people to contribute to us, if they want to elect more reformers to Congress.’

“House ethics rules prohibit members of Congress from soliciting campaign donations in House office buildings, including the Capitol Visitor Center, where Pelosi was speaking. A section of the U.S. criminal code also prohibits fund-raising in federal buildings.” (Russell Berman, “Pelosi Might Have Skirted House Ethics Rules on Campaign Solicitations,” The Hill, 2/9/2012)
