Remember Matheson’s Repeal Vote?
Utah Democrat Had a Second Chance to Stop the Government Takeover of Healthcare and Instead He Chose to Support It

WASHINGTON — As the Democrats’ government takeover of healthcare becomes one of the largest election year issues, it should be remembered that Jim Matheson blew his final chance to rein in the massive big-government behemoth (Roll Call #14, 1/19/11). New stories revealing the consequences of Matheson’s healthcare takeover for small businesses and working families will remind voters every day that he voted to keep the disastrous law in place, against the wishes of half of American voters.

“Jim Matheson’s constituents in Utah surely won’t forget his vote to keep his government takeover of healthcare as they watch their healthcare options shrink and their costs rise continuously as Election Day approaches,” said NRCC Communications Director Paul Lindsay. “Whether it was cutting $500 billion from Medicare or forcing families off their healthcare plans, Matheson’s vote makes all the broken promises from the Democrats’ failing healthcare law his own as well.”

American voters want ObamaCare repealed 50 percent to 42 percent nationwide, with even higher opposition in swing states:

“In a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll of the nation’s dozen top battleground states, a clear majority of registered voters call the bill’s passage ‘a bad thing’ and support its repeal if a Republican wins the White House in November.” (Susan Page, “Swing states poll: Health care law hurts Obama in 2012,” USA Today, 2/27/12)

Instead of recognizing this, House Democrat leaders like Democrat Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) brag about opposing repeal:

“The Maryland Democrat taunted Republicans for failing to overturn the health care reform law outright, noting that just three members of his Caucus voted for outright repeal last year.” (Jessica Brady, “Democrats Willing to Tinker With Health Care Law,” Roll Call, 3/7/12)

And the healthcare takeover will surely only get more unpopular as its effects are felt. For instance, a new survey shows fewer than 30 percent of employers are able to keep their health plans for their employees, representing another broken Democrat promise:

“Survey respondents indicate that into the second year of Health Care Reform implementation, less than 30% of employers were able to maintain grandfathered status of their health care plans… The accelerated loss of grandfathered status suggests that employers have had to make many plan changes to offset cost increases, and perhaps employers have been more willing to give up grandfathered status in order to take other steps to control costs.” (“The Health Care Reform Survey 2011-2012,” Willis Human Capital Practice, 3/8/12)
