Heavy is the Head that Wears the Dems’ “Crown Jewel
House Democrats’ Vocal Defense of Their “Crown Jewel” Exposes the Democrats’ Disarray Over ObamaCare
- If you thought House Democrats might back down from their defense of their increasingly embattled government healthcare takeover, think again. Democrat Leader Nancy Pelosi this week called ObamaCare the Democrats’ “crown jewel.”
- It’s understandable that Pelosi would go to bat for ObamaCare, since she has so much to lose if the law is ruled unconstitutional. Given Pelosi’s extensive role in crafting the law, it might even be called PelosiCare.
- The possibility of ObamaCare being ruled unconstitutional is exposing the Democrats’ disarray over the fate of ObamaCare. Even as Pelosi said she would respect the Supreme Court’s decision, President Obama was so upset about the prospect of ObamaCare being ruled unconstitutional that he desperately “took an opening shot” at the Supreme Court that “strayed perilously close to a preemptive strike on the court’s legitimacy.”
If you thought House Democrats might back down from their defense of their increasingly embattled government healthcare takeover, think again. Democrat Leader Nancy Pelosi this week called ObamaCare the Democrats’ “crown jewel”:

AFTER PELOSI COMPARED OBAMACARE TO THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE: (Peter Kasperowicz, “Pelosi Speech Connects the Healthcare Law and the Declaration of Independence,” The Hill, 3/21/2012)

HOUSE DEMS “GOING ALL OUT” TO DEFEND THEIR HEALTH CARE DISASTER: “House Democrats are going all out to defend their health care reform law as the Supreme Court takes the case next week.” (Jonathan Allen and Kate Nocera, “The Obama Vacuum: House Dems Defend Health-Care Reform,”Politico, 3/21/2012)
It’s understandable that Pelosi would go to bat for ObamaCare, since she has so much to lose if the law is ruled unconstitutional. Given Pelosi’s extensive role in crafting the law, it might even be called PelosiCare:
IS OBAMACARE ACTUALLY PELOSICARE?
“NANCY PELOSI’S FINGERPRINTS ON HEALTH CARE DEBATE”: (Carolyn Lochhead, “Nancy Pelosi’s Fingerprints on Health Care Debate,” San Francisco Chronicle, 4/2/2012)
“NO ONE WAS MORE INSTRUMENTAL IN PASSAGE” OF OBAMACARE AND “NO ONE PAID A BIGGER POLITICAL PRICE”: “Two years ago, Nancy Pelosi bet the House on health care and lost.
“No one was more instrumental in passage of the Affordable Care Act, and no one paid a bigger political price.” (Carolyn Lochhead, “Nancy Pelosi’s Fingerprints on Health Care Debate,” San Francisco Chronicle, 4/2/2012)
IF OBAMACARE RULED UNCONSTITUTIONAL, PELOSI “WILL HAVE LOST NOT ONLY HER SPEAKERSHIP BUT ALSO…HER LARGEST LEGACY”: “If the Supreme Court in June rules the law unconstitutional in whole or in part, the San Francisco Democrat and now House minority leader will have lost not only her speakership but also much or all of her largest legacy.” (Carolyn Lochhead, “Nancy Pelosi’s Fingerprints on Health Care Debate,” San Francisco Chronicle, 4/2/2012)
DEMOCRATS ARE IN DISARRAY OVER WHAT TO DO ABOUT OBAMACARE:
DESPERATE DEMOCRATS’ HAVE “TRIED TO CHANGE THE SUBJECT OF DISCUSSIONS FROM ‘OBAMACARE'” TO THE BUDGET: (Carolyn Lochhead, “Nancy Pelosi’s Fingerprints on Health Care Debate,” San Francisco Chronicle, 4/2/2012)
BUT JUST WEEKS AGO, DEMS DECIDED THEY “OWN IT. DEMS OWN OBAMACARE”: “But look: Dems own it. Dems own Obamacare.” (Greg Sargent, “Embracing the ‘ObamaCare’ Label,” The Washington Post, 3/23/2012)
WHITE HOUSE COMES TO TERMS WITH OBAMACARE: PROMOTED “#ILIKEOBAMACARE” HASHTAG ON ANNIVERSARY: “The White House did not mark the event themselves, but democrats did signal that they will not run away from their association to health care reform. The official Barack Obama twitter page retweeted and fired off messages of their own under the hash tag banner ‘#ilikeobamacare’. The move is a significant development because ‘ObamaCare’ is a generally used as a negative name for health care reform designed to attach the president to its passage.” (“GOP Targets Virginia in Anti-ObamaCare Call,” NBC 12 Decision Virginia, 3/23/2012)
The possibility of ObamaCare being ruled unconstitutional is exposing the Democrats’ disarray over the fate of ObamaCare. Even as Pelosi said she would respect the Supreme Court’s decision, President Obama was so upset about the prospect of ObamaCare being ruled unconstitutional that he desperately “took an opening shot” at the Supreme Court that “strayed perilously close to a preemptive strike on the court’s legitimacy”:
“PELOSI: DEMS READY TO ACCEPT SUPREME COURT VERDICT ON HEALTHCARE LAW”: (Mike Lillis, “Pelosi: Dems Ready to Accept Supreme Court Verdict on Healthcare Law,” The Hill, 3/28/2012)
PELOSI SAYS DEMOCRATS WILL “RESPECT” COURT RULING “AS PART OF OUR CONSTITUTIONAL PROCESS”: “House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D) said Wednesday that Democrats will accept the Supreme Court’s ruling on her party’s healthcare law — whatever it is. … ‘Democrats in the Congress have long-believed in judicial review,’ Pelosi said during a press briefing in the Capitol. ‘We respect the third branch of government and the role that they play under our Constitution, and that is a role to have the opportunity to review laws passed by Congress.’
” ‘This is part of our constitutional process, and we respect it,’ she added.”(Mike Lillis, “Pelosi: Dems Ready to Accept Supreme Court Verdict on Healthcare Law,” The Hill, 3/28/2012)
DESPERATE OBAMA SAYS NOT SO FAST, “TAKES A SHOT AT SUPREME COURT OVER HEALTHCARE” AND QUESTIONS LONG-ESTABLISHED AUTHORITY OF JUDICIAL REVIEW: “President Barack Obama took an opening shot at conservative justices on the Supreme Court on Monday, warning that a rejection of his sweeping healthcare law would be an act of ‘judicial activism’ that Republicans say they abhor.” (Jeff Mason, “Obama Takes Shot at Supreme Court Over Healthcare,” Reuters, 4/2/2012)
WASHINGTON POST: OBAMA’S “JARRING” COMMENTS “CLOSE TO A PREEMPTIVE STRIKE” ON THE SUPREME COURT’S “LEGITIMACY”:“President Obama’s comments Monday about the Supreme Court were jarring. If the court were to strike down the health-care law, Mr. Obama said, it would be a blatant example of judicial activism. That ‘an unelected group of people would somehow overturn a duly constituted and passed law,’ the president said, would be ‘an unprecedented, extraordinary step.’ Well, not exactly, and the comments strayed perilously close to a preemptive strike on the court’s legitimacy if it were to declare the individual mandate unconstitutional.” (Editorial, “President Obama Tones Down Attack on the High Court,”The Washington Post, 4/03/2012)
ONLY TO GET A SCOLDING FROM THE FIFTH CIRCUIT COURT OF APPEALS:“In the escalating battle between the administration and the judiciary, a federal appeals court apparently is calling the president’s bluff — ordering the Justice Department to answer by Thursday whether the Obama Administration believes that the courts have the right to strike down a federal law, according to a lawyer who was in the courtroom.” (Jan Crawford, “Appeals Court Fires Back Obama’s Comments on Health Care Case,” CBS News, 4/3/2012)
“BRUISED OBAMA TRIES TO WALK BACK HIS ATTACK ON THE SUPREME COURT”: (Jennifer Rubin, “Bruised Obama Tries to Walk Back His Attack on the Supreme Court,” The Washington Post, 4/4/2012)
AND THEN TRIES TO CHANGE THE SUBJECT FROM OBAMACARE: “The President’s depiction of the wonkish and formerly obscure House Budget Chairman as some political monster is itself telling. Mr. Obama is conceding that he can’t run on the economic recovery, the stimulus, health care, green energy or any of the other grand liberal ambitions that have dominated his time in office. All of those are unpopular or failures. He was elected on hope and change, but now his only hope is to change the subject to the ogres he claims are the disloyal opposition.” (Editorial, “Paul Ryan’s Hunger Games,” The Wall Street Journal, 4/3/2012)
