Rhode Island Congressman Left Providence in a Fiscal Crisis

WASHINGTON – The National Republican Congressional Committee has added Congressman David Cicilline to its list of 10 Most Corrupt Democrats, a new campaign that highlights Democrats’ above-the-law actions and unethical behavior each week. A new ad features how the Rhode Island Congressman misled the public about Providence’s financial state while serving as mayor, leaving Rhode Islanders with a $28.6 million deficit that was revealed only after he won his congressional seat.

“David Cicilline’s irresponsibility and dishonesty left Rhode Island families to clean up the disastrous financial mess he created as the mayor of Providence,” said NRCC Communications Director Paul Lindsay. “David Cicilline can no longer be trusted.”

The script for this ad is as follows:

ANNOUNCER: From personal favors to cover-ups. Backroom deals to special trips. These are the 10 most corrupt Dems of 2012.

This week’s corrupt Democrat: Rhode Islander David Cicilline.

As mayor, he staged a massive cover up, misleading voters and masking Providence’s fiscal crisis in order to get elected to Congress.

And while he claimed before the election that the city’s finances were like this …

The reality was more like this …

TV ANCHOR: Providence Mayor Angel Tavaras says the coming storm is worse than he feared.

MAYOR ANGEL TAVARAS: I thought it was maybe a category 3 hurricane, this is uh uh a category 5.

ANNOUNCER: Time and time again, Cicilline’s claims just didn’t add up.

DAVID CICILLINE: We have A ratings from all of our ratings agencies. We have built up a reserve in the city.

ANNOUNCER: And while Cicilline told us Providence was in “excellent fiscal condition,”

Voters soon learned the truth,

But not until after the election.

One thing’s clear,

We just can’t trust David Cicilline.
