Obama won’t say no to the $1 trillion coin

January 9, 2013

Hello –

At today’s White House press briefing, Jay Carney was asked whether or not President Obama was in favor of Democrats’ plan to mint a trillion-dollar platinum coin to pay down our deficit. Five separate times he refused to rule it out. Watch the clip HERE

It’s clear that President Obama and House Democrats have no intention to cut spending. They simply want to print more money.

The NRCC launched a petition on Tuesday to stop Democrats from minting coins to pay for Obama’s spending addiction at www.NRCC.org/spending.

NRCC Chairman Greg Walden Introduced A Bill To Ban The Creation Of Trillion-Dollar Platinum Coins. “Lawmakers are still positioning themselves for a debt ceiling fight in a few months, but one Republican congressman wants to snuff out a particular idea immediately: the U.S. Treasury minting $1 trillion platinum coins to avert a debt ceiling showdown. Rep. Greg Walden (R-Ore.) has introduced a bill to specifically ban President Barack Obama from minting the coins.” (Bobby Cervantes, “Greg Walden’s Bill Bans Minting $1T Coin,” Politico, 1/7/13)

Below please find some key tweets on the Carney exchange.

Carney completely dodges @chucktodd‘s questions about the trillion dollar coin idea.

Sure sounds like Jay Carney’s leaving the $1 trillion coin option on the table to me.

It is not unmeaningful that the WH rejects the 14A option but avoids taking a position on the coin.

Now that Obama has refused to rule it out – the next question we have is where do Nancy Pelosi and House Democrats stand on the coin?
