ObamaCare: A Democratic Debacle For Generations To Come
Since the start of 2013, ObamaCare’s fatal flaws and broken promises have been increasingly coming to light.
Just yesterday, The Hill reported how the disastrous law has Democrats shaking in their liberal boots and fearing for the effects it will have on the 2014 elections.
But today’s piece by Josh Kraushaar in the National Journal explores the effects of Obamacare on Democrats for years to come.
His basic premise lies in the fact that healthcare affects voters in a very intimate and direct way—unlike many issues politicians in Washington argue about. Signs that premiums are going up (which they have) or businesses being forced to change workers’ health plans (or drop them altogether), will cause Democrats significant political headaches.
“In the 2010 midterms, Democrats suffered a historic landslide when the debate over health care was abstract. The stakes could be even higher when voters have first-hand experience with its effects.”
According to Kraushaar, the promises Obama and fellow Democrats made to pass the law are not coming to pass. Even worse, the stagnating economy can be attributed in many respects to the law.
“But to win support for the law, Obama claimed it would lower costs, improve the quality of care and not force anyone off their current health care plan. That’s not shaping up to be the case. Premiums are rising, employer uncertainty is growing and voters aren’t viewing the law favorably – with many not even aware of the frontloaded benefits already in place. And even on the access side, the law of unintended consequences is kicking in: Some large retail companies are cutting back employee hours so they won’t have to offer health insurance. That’s not good for the economy or health care access.”
We’ve documented just these occurrences here over and over and over again.
It’s a simple fact: bad policy will become bad politics. Democrats are just beginning to realize what most of the American people already know: That Obamacare is a disaster that is hurting families and keeping our economy from a real recovery.
That’s why only 35 percent of Americans, in a recent survey, had any type of “favorable” impression of the law. That’s maybe also why Democratic architects of Obamacare like Max Baucus and Jay Rockefeller have said the law was a “train wreck” and “beyond comprehension.”
