IRS Targeting Broader Than Originally Thought

June 24, 2013

Danny Werfel, the new head of the scandal-ridden IRS, admitted on a conference call with reporters today that the agency’s inappropriate targeting was both “broader and lasted longer” than originally thought.

According to the Associated Press,

“The Internal Revenue Service’s screening of groups seeking tax-exempt status was broader and lasted longer than has been previously disclosed, the new head of the agency said Monday.

‘In a conference call with reporters, Danny Werfel said that after becoming acting IRS chief last month, he discovered wide-ranging and improper terms on lists screeners were still using to choose groups for careful examinations. He did not specify what terms were on the lists, but said he suspended the use of all such lists immediately.”

Though Werfel offered no further details, he will be appearing in front of the House Ways and Means Committee this Thursday to report on the IRS’s current state of affairs. It’s no doubt that this will be a main topic of the hearing.

Inappropriately targeting Americans based on their political beliefs is wrong and unworthy of our country. From the beginning, the Republican majority in the House has been demanding answers from both the IRS and the Obama administration.

Today’s news proves that we cannot stop now. We must get to the bottom of this scandal and ensure that something like it never happens again.
