NRCC Chairman Greg Walden’s Statement Regarding North Carolina Congressman Howard Coble’s Retirement Announcement

November 7, 2013

National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Greg Walden (R-OR) released the following statement today following Rep. Howard Coble’s (R-NC) announcement that he will be retiring after this current term:

“Howard’s legacy in the House is immeasurable – and in the 28 years he has represented North Carolina’s Sixth District, his commitment to his constituents and the values that they hold dear have been unwavering. Known in the House as the “Sharp Pencil” due to his commitment to reigning in spending, cutting government waste and bringing commonsense policies to the floor, Howard’s dedication to our country has left a lasting legacy. Having served 5 ½ years in the United States Coast Guard and 22 years in the Coast Guard Reserve, Howard is truly a respectable and admired statesman. A native North Carolinian, Howard is an active and involved member of his community, participating in numerous local groups and charities.

“Howard will be missed in the halls of Congress, and he is leaving incredibly big shoes to fill. I am confident though that North Carolina voters will elect a Representative who will work to continue Howard’s legacy and will keep this district in Republican hands after the 2014 election cycle. My thoughts and best wishes are with Howard and his family as they take this next step in their lives, and I thank him for his decades of service to our nation.”
