“The deepening national recession puts a strain on the budgets of Iowa middle-class families. That’s why I support bipartisan efforts in the Iowa Legislature to help create more good-paying jobs, stand up for the priorities of middle-class families, and be fiscally responsible. It’s also why I’m listening to your comments and suggestions for balancing the state budget without raising taxes.” – “The Appel Report,” Feb. 19, 2009 | “The deepening national recession puts a strain on the budgets of Iowa middle-class families. “Because the national recession shows no sign of letting up soon, we’re moving forward with a fiscally responsible budget that drastically cuts spending while maintaining Iowa’s priorities. For example, when the Senate recently passed an Education Budget, we focused on funding programs that best improve student achievement for all Iowa students. We reduced funding for programs that don’t meet that core mission, don’t serve all Iowa children or don’t directly impact kids.” – “The Appel Report,” April 16, 2009 | “Because the national recession shows no sign of letting up soon, we’re moving forward with a fiscally responsible budget that drastically cuts spending while maintaining Iowa’s priorities. For example, when the Senate recently passed an Education Budget, we focused on funding programs that best improve student achievement for all Iowa students. “With the 2010 legislative session just around the corner, we’re keeping focus on helping middle-class families and small businesses, creating good-paying jobs and balancing the state budget without raising taxes. In spite of tough times, we can protect the progress we’ve made in these areas by continuing to change state government to make it more accountable.” – “The Appel Report,” Dec. 24, 2009 | With the 2010 legislative session just around the corner, we’re keeping focus on helping middle-class families and small businesses, creating good-paying jobs and balancing the state budget without raising taxes. “I am working hard make sure that it won’t be business at usual at the Statehouse in 2010. The deepening national recession continues to hit Iowa’s large and small businesses, communities, families and state services. Despite successful efforts to cut hundreds of millions of dollars in state spending, more cuts must be made.” – “The Appel Report,” Jan. 7, 2010 | “We are working hard make sure that it won’t be business at usual at the Statehouse in 2010. “In the last days of the 2010 session of the Iowa Legislature, we are wrapping up the final pieces of a fiscally responsible plan to help middle-class families, small businesses and other Iowans recover from the national recession. I remain committed to balancing the state’s check book without raising your taxes. I’ve worked hard this session to ensure that state government works for you, not against you. That’s why I’m supporting a responsible financial plan that includes saving more and spending less.” – “The Appel Report,” April 1, 2010 | “In the last days of the 2010 session of the Iowa Legislature, we are wrapping up the final pieces of a fiscally responsible plan to help middle-class families, small businesses and other Iowans recover from the national recession. “Veterans Day is Thursday, November 11. I join all Iowans in thanking those who’ve served and defended our country. Our veterans and servicemembers have made tremendous sacrifices-a powerful reminder that freedom comes at a cost. For that, they deserve our respect and appreciation. Here in Iowa, our support for veterans, soldiers and their families has made our state a national leader.” – “The Appel Report,” Nov. 11, 2010 | “Veterans Day is Thursday, November 11. “It’s been an honor and a pleasure to represent you in the Iowa Senate. Thank you for the hundreds of letters, e-mails, phone calls and face-to-face visits over the years. You’ve given me great ideas and suggestions and have helped me better understand the issues, both large and small. Together, we accomplished much. Iowa’s renewable energy industry is thriving. Our state is number one when it comes to children’s health care. And we’ve laid the groundwork to keep building a strong economy.” – “The Appel Report,” Dec. 9, 2010 | “It’s been an honor and a pleasure to represent you in the Iowa Senate.
