Is Don Draper Running for Congress in Virginia?
Is Mad Men’s Don Draper running for Congress in Virginia’s 10th District? If you were following the sexist comments made by the Democrat nominee you would think yes!
John Foust has received numerous articles highlighting his tone-deaf and out-of-touch comment that he doesn’t know if Barbara Comstock has ever “even had a real job.”
The Winchester Star editorial page detailed just how sexist Foust’s comments towards Barbara Comstock’s career were. As a mother, attorney, small business owner, and state legislator, it’s easy to see that Foust’s comments were a direct attempt to demean her long career.
Our View: Yes, ‘Beyond The Pale’

Republicans, so we’ve been told ad nauseam, are waging a relentless “war on women.” Well, it seems as if John Foust, Democratic candidate in Virginia’s 10th congressional district, can be adjudged guilty of same. Or, at the very least, of a snit-filled “war” against one woman in particular — his Republican opponent, Barbara Comstock.
At a campaign event Thursday in Leesburg, Mr. Foust questioned — by all accounts with a straight and sober face — whether Mrs. Comstock’s “even had a real job.”
Now, we’ll not dignify such a comment by citing chapter and verse of Mrs. Comstock’s vitae — her campaign, which labeled the remark “beyond the pale,” can do that adequately — except to say she’s an accomplished attorney, state legislator, and mother.
But we will highlight a stinging comeback from state Sen. Jill Holtzman Vogel, R-Upperville, who represents Winchester and the Northern Valley in Richmond. To wit:
“Regrettably John Foust’s comments reflect an ignorant, insensitive, and arcane view of women and the role they play in the workforce. If her value in the workforce is diminished because she combined being a mom with being an attorney, a federal public servant, and now a state legislator, then that reflects poorly on his view of all women who lead the workforce, lead households, and lead this nation. It strikes home because I work to maintain that balance every day, and I consider my work as a lawyer, a legislator, and a mom, all real jobs!”
Well said, Mrs. Vogel.
