Apparently Gwen Graham Has No Idea What She’s Talking About
So here’s a doozy for you: Gwen Graham this morning pronounced her love for Barack Obama’s plan to make community colleges “free” in the United States. As reported by The Tallahassee Democrat:
One of the most important parts of Obama’s speech, according to Graham, was his proposal for free community college, a proposal that if it were to become law, would surely impact the 14,000 students at Tallahassee Community College.
“Education is one of the largest economic drivers in North Florida,” Graham said. “Community colleges provide a crucial role in training the next generation of workers for small business and new industries.”
The only problem with taking that position is that “free” community college actually costs $60 billion.
And how does President Obama plan pay for that? By raising taxes on middle class tuition savings accounts.
That makes Graham’s embrace of “free” community colleges all the more interesting when you consider that she later states in the same article that she opposes tax increases. (You know…like a tax increase on middle class families saving for college.)
The Tallahassee Democrat further reports:
“I don’t agree with all of the president’s proposals, like raising taxes while our economy is still recovering,” (Graham) said.
So Graham supports Obama’s plan to raise taxes on middle class college savings accounts to pay for the “free” community college, but opposes raising taxes.
Wait, what?
NRCC Comment: “Gwen Graham can’t have it both ways – either she supports Barack Obama’s plan to raise taxes on college tuition savings accounts to pay for so-called free community college or she doesn’t. It is a shame that Gwen Graham would embrace Barack Obama’s fiscally reckless proposals as the expense of North Florida families trying to save for their children’s future.” –NRCC Spokesman Chris Pack
