Is LuAnn Bennett a tax day tax cheat?

April 18, 2016

VA-10 candidate LuAnn Bennett recently said on camera that she has always paid Virginia taxes for the past 35 years.  But the release of Bennett’s House Ethics financial disclosure report raises red flags on whether she is telling the truth.  According to the report, Bennett earned in the range of $15,001 – $50,000 for renting out her Virginia property in 2015.

At the same time Bennett started earning income on her Virginia property, she stopped earning rental income on her DC Ritz-Carlton penthouse condo.

Presumably, Bennett moved out of her Virginia residence and into her Ritz-Carlton penthouse that is 0.7 miles from her office in downtown DC (more on that HERE), which would contradict her claim that she has paid Virginia taxes for the past 35 years.  So is Bennett lying when she says she has always paid VA taxes to avoid being seen as a carpetbagger to the voters of VA-10?  Or is she telling the truth about always paying Virginia taxes and committing tax fraud by dodging paying the taxes she owes as a resident of the District of Columbia?

NRCC Comment: “LuAnn Bennett says she has always paid Virginia taxes, but the property Bennett owns in Virginia was rented out at the time she was allegedly living there in order to qualify as a resident of the Commonwealth.  Something is off about LuAnn Bennett’s residency and tax history, and she owes it to the people of Virginia’s 10th District to tell the truth on what exactly is going on.” –NRCC Spokesman Chris Pack
