Scott Peters Donor Sentenced To Prison For Election Fraud
Yesterday, Scott Peters donor Babulal Bera was sentenced to prison for felony election fraud. Babulal, father of Congressman Ami Bera, received a sentence of 1 year and 1 day for his part in a crime that involved more than 90 straw donors and funneled nearly $270,000 to his son’s campaign.
Peters is currently named in an FEC complaint regarding a series of donations in which the Peters campaign “received $41,600 from Rep. Ami Bera or members of his family from 2012 to 2015. Each of the 16 contributions was matched with one for the same amount from Peters or his family to the campaign of Bera, a Democrat in the Bay Area.”
Peters has returned a portion of Babulal Bera’s contributions, but has kept the vast majority of donations from the Bera family.
NRCC Comment: “As Scott Peters faces a formal complaint regarding his fundraising practices and one of his donors heads to prison, voters deserve to know just how Peters is financing his campaigns. Will Peters ever return the full amount of Babulal Bera’s tainted campaign cash?” – NRCC Spokesman Zach Hunter
