Activist Left Protests Democrats
The tensions in the Democratic Party have been on full display since its meltdown post-election.
The hysteria is beginning to take shape in the form of radical left-wing activists demanding Democratic elected officials engage in all out obstruction to the Republican agenda. People are starting to take notice.
But there’s a risk in outright, perpetual obstruction as well and it’s simmering below the surface in conversations between Democratic lawmakers, leaders and strategists as the party debates the most effective path forward: If Democrats protest everything with hair-on-fire outrage, will anything end up sticking with the American public beyond their infinite indignity? If they cry wolf every 12 hours, will the effect of their urgency wane over time? Instead of presenting an alternative vision, will they end up looking simply like a party of outrage?
House Democrats are even starting to feel pressure from the base back home in congressional districts with groups labeling themselves “The Resistance” taking aim at members they feel have betrayed their radical agenda.
A three-term California congressman is facing an uproar from within his own party as a newly formed anti-Trump group called The Resistance plans to stage a protest outside his office on Thursday afternoon.
Rep. Ami Bera (D.), who has represented a swing district in California since 2013, will have his commitment to protecting minority groups challenged by the group, according to a report in the local Elk Grove News.
The activist left is pulling the Democratic Party further to the left and making it nearly impossible for their members to course correct after a disastrous 2016 cycle.
