swing and a miss
Make no mistake, National Democrats thought they had Georgia-06 in their column going as far back as late February. Ossoff raised $25 million and Democrats withheld resources from other special elections in KS, MT, and SC because they “saw a shot a victory” in this race.
Party figures like Nancy Pelosi and Tom Perez told people they were going to turn Georgia blue and a massive amount of progressive money followed.
Ossoff was referred to as a “near ideal candidate” and others said he was someone who could “demonstrate the strength of the anti-Trump resistance.”
Democrats threw the kitchen sink at Georgia-06 with the DCCC sending nearly a dozen staffers to the district in March, a number that later grew to 70 or so by the end of the race.
Other Democratic candidates in 2018 will not have the inherent advantages Ossoff had in this unique special election, and Democrats blew their chance to pick up a real victory.
