she was not supposed to get this
Elissa Slotkin left her D.C. home off of her Personal Financial Disclosure. She likely wanted to avoid questions about her residency (so she wouldn’t be labeled as a DC insider).
Unfortunately for her, nothing gets past us. A quick timeline for you–
May 2017: Slotkin registered to vote in Michigan – claiming she was a primary resident of The Great Lakes State.
*She was required by law to notify the D.C. Tax and Revenue Office of this change. She failed to do this.*May 2017 – September 2017: Slotkin continued to receive a special tax break that only primary D.C. residents qualify for.
October 2017: Slotkin is called out in a Detroit News story – “The Michigan Republican Party on Thursday called Slotkin a ‘DC insider,’ arguing she is still registered to vote there and that she’s taking the homestead tax exemption on her District of Columbia property, which is only supposed to apply to a homeowner’s principal residence.”
Soon after being outed in The Detroit News: Slotkin sends a letter to DC saying she should not have received the DC tax break.
This begs the question: Did Elissa Slotkin commit tax fraud? Or voter registration fraud?
