It is time for U.S. Rep. Elaine Luria to release a public statement on where she stands on the impeachment of President Donald Trump. The report of Special Counsel Robert Mueller was made public in April. It clearly highlights that Trump obstructed justice on many occasions. Mueller’s testimony on July 24 confirmed what’s in the report.
More than 120 House members have signed onto an impeachment inquiry of Trump. Luria has not. It would be politically unsound for Luria not to let her constituents know where she stands in this important moment in our history. We need clarity and political conviction from the freshman congresswoman.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democratic leaders have spent too much time grandstanding in front of the press. We need our leaders to stand up against lawlessness and corruption in our government. It would be political suicide for the Congress, especially House Democrats, to start impeachment hearings during the upcoming presidential election season. Many Americans have not been educated on Trump’s lawless and criminal behavior. Democrats need to call out Republicans for covering up Trump’s crimes.
I strongly urge Luria to stand up for truth, decency, justice and respect for the rule of law in making her decision about this president. It’s not about Democrats vs. Republicans, conservatives vs. liberals, or partisanship vs. bipartisanship. It’s about saving our democracy from tyranny.
