NRCC Statement on NE-02 Primary Election
May 15, 2024
The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) released the following statement on Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional district primary election:
“Congratulations to Congressman Don Bacon on his primary election victory. As a former brigadier general and strong, commonsense legislator, there is no one better suited to serve Nebraska voters than Don Bacon. As the general election begins, we are eager to remind Nebraskans why they rejected Tony Vargas before – his liberal out-of-touch record on inflation and crime – as well as new troubling allegations of violent assault.” – NRCC Spokeswoman Delanie Bomar
Background:
- The NRCC opened a “Battle Station” field office on September 25, 2023 in NE-02 to partner with Don Bacon in knocking on more than 22,000 doors and making 143,000 phone calls.
- Vargas is known to have a violent temper. He physically assaulted a taxi driver over payment for a cab ride.
- Bacon constantly outperforms the top of the ticket. In 2020, Biden won the district 52%-46% and Bacon won re-election 51%-49%.
- Despite NE-02 having an Even PVI, Cook Political ranks NE-02 as Lean Republican, another indicator of Bacon’s strength.
