NRCC Statement on NM-02 Primary Election
June 5, 2024
The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) released the following statement on New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional district primary election:
“Congratulations to Yvette Herrell on officially securing the primary election victory. As the former Congresswoman, Yvette has proven she is a fighter for securing the southern border and is ready to take on Bidenomics head-on. As the general election begins, we are eager to remind New Mexicans of Gabe Vasquez’s extreme anti-border security record and Defund the Police advocacy – as well as a new troubling arrest warrant and racial slur.”– NRCC Spokeswoman Delanie Bomar
Background:
- NM-02 is categorized as a “Toss Up” seat.
- El Paso police recently executed an arrest warrant against Vasquez and he was put out on bond.
- Last week, Vasquez came under fire for previously calling a former colleague a “n***er.”
- Vasquez has had run-ins with law enforcement over domestic disturbances and marijuana possession — in which he tried to flush the drugs down the toilet when police knocked on the door.
- Vasquez has an anti-law enforcement track record. He has called to defund the police and he advocated against funding for the Las Cruces police department.
