“Kaptur Deprives Voters”

Last week, Chicken Little Marcy Kaptur declined to debate Republican Derek Merrin, making it clear she is desperately hiding and depriving voters of hearing the truth about her extreme record.

Toledo Blade: “The voters are the losers, thanks to Ms. Kaptur’s unfortunate refusal to meet her opponent in a neutral debate setting.”

Editorial: Kaptur deprives voters

When U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D., Toledo) passed up a live televised debate with her opponent, state Rep. Derek Merrin (R., Monclova Township) on Friday, she did herself and the voters of the 9th Congressional District a disservice.

The Kaptur campaign turned down the opportunity for a debate to be broadcast live by The Blade and Buckeye Broadband, claiming Mr. Merrin “is a deeply unserious candidate … using millions of dollars sent by Washington obstructionists to spread lies about Marcy’s record.”

She claimed that Mr. Merrin isn’t serious because Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump pressured congressional Republicans not to act on a compromise border bill.

It was The Blade and Buckeye Broadband who offer to provide that platform, not Ms. Kaptur.

We thank Mr. Merrin for agreeing to the debate, and doing so without throwing up unreasonable demands such as Ms. Kaptur has done.

A debate is an opportunity for Ms. Kaptur to defend her record against Mr. Merrin’s claims. The harm done by that decision is to the voters, who would have benefited from an hour of having the two candidates grilled by Blade journalists.

But it is Ms. Kaptur who is unserious in expecting us to believe that a bill cobbled together in the months before the election makes up for President Biden’s and Vice President Kamala Harris’ three and a half-year failure to take any meaningful action to control and protect our Southern border.

The best opportunity to have a serious discussion on the public policy issues confronting the next Representative of the 9th Congressional district is in a debate like The Blade proposes. The Kaptur campaign made that impossible with an impractical demand.
