Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-Washougal) has not said a word about Washington’s new 9.9% income tax, and cities across the state are now discovering why Democrats may have preferred that silence to scrutiny.

Businesses have been leaving the state or announcing relocations since Ferguson signed the bill in March. Howard Schultz announced his move from Seattle to Florida the day legislators approved the tax. The state itself has already hired 300 new workers and budgeted more than $557 million just to administer the new law.
Perez has offered no public comment through any of it. In a swing district Trump carried by three points, that record has become the central issue of the 2026 race.
